The second powertrain available on the Silverado 1500 is the Vortec 4.8L FlexFuel V8 engine. The Vortec 4.8L is standard on all LS, LT, 4WD WT Extended Cab Long Box and WT Crew Cab. The LT Extended Cab Long Box model doesn’t come with this engine standard and the 4.8L is available on all WT models. The Vortec 4.8L V8 delivers 302 horsepower and has variable valve timing—which makes the engines performance smother and more consistent. The Vortec 4.8L engine is also efficient with its EPA estimated 20 highway MPG—impressive for a powerful truck!
The next and most popular powertrain option for the Silverado 1500 is the Vortec 5.3L V8 with FlexFuel and Active Fuel Management. This engine is standard with an aluminum block on XFE models and is mandatory on 4WD WT, LT and LTZ models. An iron block is standard on 2WD LTZ, but available on 2WD WT and LT Extended and Crew Cab models. The 5.3L Vortec delivers 315 horsepower, which gives the Silverado excellent performance with great tow and haul capacity. The 5.3L has such a high level of performance due in part to its variable valve timing system which allows for smooth and consistent operation. Amazingly, the Silverado achieves an impressive EPA estimated 22 MPG in the highway! The Silverado’s excellent efficiency is due to superb overall design and engineering including features like Active Fuel Management—which uses only half of the engines cylinders under light-load conditions to improve fuel economy. 
The Silverado 1500 has two available transmission options. The standard WS, LS and LT model transmission is a 4-speed automatic with tow/haul mode. The other transmission option is the 6-speed automatic with tow/haul mode and tap-up tap-down shifting. The 6-speed transmission is standard with XFE and LTZ models and is also included with all 5.3L and 6.2L Vortec engines. Both of these transmissions deliver the power of all the Vortec engines with precision and efficiency.
